Washita Battlefield National Historic Site
(Oklahoma)

This park site commemorates the location where Lt.
Col. George Armstrong Custer, leading the 7th U.S.
Cavalry, attacked the Cheyenne village led by Peace
Chief Black Kettle.  More than 100 Indians were
killed or captured.  It happened at dawn on Nov. 27,
1868.  This was a controversial action and Custer
was accused of massacring the Indians.  I was at
this site in western Oklahoma and it is moving to
stand still, listen to the prairie winds, and look out
over the grassland where this event occurred.
