Vicksburg National Military Park (Mississippi)
This park site commemorates the Battle of
Vicksburg in the Civil War. For 47 days in 1863, the
city of Vicksburg, Mississippi, was under siege. On
July 4, the city surrendered to Union forces. There
are many historical markers, trenches, and
earthworks here. Also, the U.S.S. Cairo, a union
gunboat is anchored in the Mississippi River. The
Union success here gave the Union control of the
Mississippi River. Also, the South was divided,
cutting off Confederates in the deep South west of
the Mississippi River from their fellow countrymen
east of the River.
