Tuskegee Institute National Historical Site
(Alabama)
This park site is on the grounds of Tuskegee
University. Booker T. Washington founded it in 1881
as a school for African-Americans. The brick
buildings which the students themselves built,
Washington's home, and the George Washington
Carver Museum are preserved here. It was Booker
T. Washington who brought Dr. Carver here to
teach. Both of these men were very prominent
African-Americans during the time period of the late
1800's and early 1900's, when segregation was in
effect.
