Tumacacori National Historical Park (Arizona)

This park site contains the ruins of three Spanish
colonial Catholic missions.  In the 1600's and 1700's,
Spain, which had colonized the Southwest, set up
various missions there.  The purpose was to convert
the native people to Catholocism.  This effort was a
contentious one inasmuch as the native people had
been practicing their own religious rites and did not
want to be forced to abandon them.  The visitor
center does a good job of explaining the conflicts.
