Theodore Roosevelt National Park (North Dakota)
This park site consists of two large sub-units and the
location of Theodore Roosevelt's Elkhorn Ranch in
the late 1883. It was in 1863 that Roosevelt,
despondent over the death of his mother and wife,
came to Dakota Territory to ranch. The larger areas
of the park site include scenic badlands (colorful
sculptures rock formations). Animals include
longhorn cattle, bison, and prairie dogs. Adjacent to
the South Unit Visitor Center is the Maltese Cross
Cabin, from which Theodore Roosevelt ranched from
1883-1884. It was moved here from its original
location.
