Statue of Liberty National Monument (New York
& New Jersey)

This park site consists of two islands in New York
Harbor.  On Liberty Island, part of New York State,
is the world-famous Statue of Liberty.  This 152-foot
copper statue was a gift from France to the United
States in 1886.  It has symbolized freedom for
immigrants who come here.  When they would come
on boats from elsewhere they would see this before
landing.  The second island, Ellis Island, is part of
New York and New Jersey.  Between 1892 and
1954, approximately 12 million immigrants who
entered the United States went through legal
procedures and medical inspections on buildings on
this island.  The Main Building is now a museum
dedicated to the history of immigration and the
important role this island played in processing people
who came here.  You can do the Junior Ranger
program on either island.
