St. Paul's Church National Historic Site (New
York)

Construction of this Presbyterian church began
before the Revolutionary War.  In 1776, during the
battle of Pell's Point, it was used as a hospital to
treat injured Hessian soldiers fighting for the British.
The church's cemetery has various pre-Revolutionary
War burials.  Not far from here, at the Eastchester
(Westchester County, New York) village green, a
local election took place in 1733.  In this election
there were Quakers who refused to take an oath
that they owned property as taking oaths was
against their religion.  They were refused the right to
vote.  As a result of this incident, the colonial New
York legislature passed a law enabling people to
affirm instead of taking oaths.  This was an
important milestone in the history of freedom of
religion in what was to become the United States.
