Petersburg National Battlefield (Virginia)
This park site commemorates the nine and a half
month siege of Petersburg, Virginia, by Union troops
during the Civil War. It ended on Apr. 2, 1865, when
Robert E. Lee evacuated the city. The Confederate
collapse led to the fall of Richmond, the Confederate
capital. There are several sub-units of this park site
and the one I found most interesting was at Five
Forks. There is a ranger station there where Civil
War rifles and guns are displayed. You can pick
them up and even shove the rammers down the
rifles. The guns are heavy and you appreciate the
difficulty of a Civil War soldier having to carry and
shoot it.
