Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial
(Ohio)
This park site serves two purposes. Firstly, it
commemorates the naval victory of Commodore
Oliver Hazard Perry on behalf of the Unites States
against Great Britain in the Battle of Lake Erie on
Sept. 10, 1813, in the War of 1812. Secondly, it
serves as a monument to the longlasting peace
between the United States and Canada along the
world's longest undefended international border.
The site consists of a tall Doric column constructed
from 1912-1915. It is situated on South Bass Island,
north of Ohio's mainland. Most people arrive here
by ferry from the mainland although you can also fly
to the island. In this area in Lake Erie, there are
several other small islands also and they can be
seen from the observation deck at the top of the
monument column.
