Little Rock Central High School National Historic
Site (Arkansas)
After the U.S. Supreme Court issued its decision in
Brown v. Board of Education, which declared that
segregation in public schools was unconstitutional,
African-Americans in cities and towns in the South
attempted to enroll in what had been up to then all-
white schools. This was a struggle in many areas as
the local white people resisted integration of their
schools. One of the most contentious reactions to
integration involved Little Rock Central High School.
On the morning of September 23, 1957, nine African-
American teenagers stood up to an angry crowd
protesting integration in front of the school as they
entered it for the first time. This event was
broadcast around the world. Because of white mob
violence, Pres. Dwight Eisenhower had to use
federal troops to escort the African-American
children into the school and protect them; he became
the first president since the post-Civil War
Reconstruction period to use federal troops in
support of African-American civil rights. This site
commemorates the struggle to integrate the school
and tells the story of what happened.
