| Lectures In late August 2007, an article about me appeared in Science Studies Weekly Challenger, a student newspaper for fifth graders. Ms. Debbie Coyle's fifth grade class at Liberty Magnet School, in Sebastian, Florida, read the article and asked me to come down to speak to them. In January 2008, I went down to Florida and spoke not only to Ms. Coyle's class but also to the other three fifth grade classes at the school. I brought with me two banners with some of my Junior Ranger badges and patches on them to show the students. In advance of my lectures, I created a special Junior Ranger booklet for the students to complete before the day of my speaking. In each class, I reviewed the booklet with the students and awarded them all Junior Ranger badges. I also distributed to the students a folder comprised of several park site Junior Ranger booklets and brochures and other information about the National Park Service. This way they had the opportunity to earn more badges by mailing in the booklets to the parks, who would mail back the badges. While I was in Florida, I visited Everglades National Park, Big Cypress National Preserve, and Biscayne National Park. During the 2008-09 school year, I lectured to fifth grade students in New York City, in Brooklyn and Manhattan. I was also invited by Ms. Debra Jones, the fifth grade teacher at New Lebanon Dixie Middle School in Ohio to lecture to her five classes, which I did in January 2009. New Lebanon is near Dayton so I toured the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park and also saw the U.S. Air Force Museum, which has a fascinating collection of the Air Force One airplanes used by the presidents. On this page you can see some photos of my talks to the students. Click on each photo to see it larger. |
