Lava Beds National Monument (California)

Volcanic eruptions from half a million years ago
created the unusual landscape which is preserved in
this park site.  There are more than 500 lava tube
caves.  In one of the Indian Wars called the Modoc
War, the Native Americans hid in a fortress created
by lava.
