Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park
(Alaska & Washington)

This park has two sub-units:  Skagway, Alaska; and
Seattle, Washington.  The Skakgay sub-unit consists
of historic buildings there and portions of the Chilkoot
and White Pass Trails.  This sub-unit of the park is in
the Alaska Panhandle.  The Seattle sub-unit consists
of a visitor center in the Pioneer Square Historic
District.  The Gold Rush took place in 1897-1898.
Tens of thousands of people first purchased supplies
in Seattle and the headed for the Klondike in Alaska
to prospect for gold.  Both sub-units do an excellent
job of relating the story of that gold rush.  At the
Skagway sub-unit, you can take a ranger-guided tour
of the old townsite of Dyea.  Thousands of people
lived in neighboring Dyea for about a year as
prospectors climbed the Chilkoot Trail into Canada.
The townsite is now overgrown with trees and grass
but here and there one can see evidence that a town
used to exist.
