Gulf Islands National Seashore (Mississippi &
Florida)
This park site contains various sub-units in two
states. My favorite sub-unit was Fort Barrancas, in
Pensacola, Florida, which was built by the
Americans from 1839-1844 to defend the coast.
The fort is largely intact and is one of the few forts
from the 1800s still intact. It was on this site that the
Spanish and British had built forts when they owned
the land. Other sub-units in Florida include Fort
Pickens, Perdido Key, and Naval Live Oaks. The
last two are beaches. Davis Bayou in Mississippi is
a salt marsh. Hiking is a popular activity at all the
sites.
