Governors Island National Monument (New York)

This park site is located on Governors Island, which
is one-half mile off the southern tip of Manhattan.
The island was used by the military from 1776-
1996.  Two early 19th century fortifications, Fort Jay
and Castle Williams, played strategic roles in
defending New York City and were part of a larger
harbor defensive system.
