Gateway National Recreation Area (New York &
New Jersey)
This park contains three units in the New York City
metropolitan area. Two units, Staten Island and
Jamaica Bay are in New York City. The third unit,
Sandy Hook, is in New Jersey. There are sub-units
within the units. Historic sub-units include Floyd
Bennett Field, in Brooklyn, and Miller Field, in Staten
Island, which were both used as airfields at one
time. Some airplane hangars are still left on Floyd
Bennett Field. Fort Wadsworth on Staten Island and
Fort Tilden on Queens were once forts which
protected New York harbor. Most of the activities in
all the units today are recreational: swimming,
picnicking, cycling, athletics, etc.
