Fort Washington Park (Maryland)

Fort Washington is a sub-unit of National Capital
Parks - East, which is a unit of the National Park
Service combining various locations in Southeast
Washington, D.C., and nearby suburban Maryland.
It is located in Maryland just outside Washington.  It
sits on the Potomac River and overlooks the
shoreline of Washington, D.C., and Virginia.  The fort
was built in 1814 to replace an earlier fort destroyed
during the War of 1812.  The fort was the only one
defending Washington at the time the Civil War
began, at which time a series of forts was built to
ring the city.  (One of them was
Fort Dupont.)
Besides being able to see the fort, one can fish,
hike, bike, or picnic.  Although Fort Washington Park
is a sub-unit of National Capital Parks - East, it gives
out its own Junior Ranger badge.
