Fort Vancouver National Historic Site
(Washington and Oregon)
At the Washington location, from 1825-1849 the
Hudson Bay Company had its headquarters. This
was a British company that did a lot of business
buying and selling furs. At the time, this part of what
is now the United States was claimed by both
England and the young United States. The fort was
also involved in politics and manufacturing. The
Oregon location has been acquired recently by the
National Park Service. It contains the home of Dr.
John McLaughlin, who was known as the "Father of
Oregon."
