Fire Island National Seashore (New York)

The dunes of a band of wide, narrow islands south
of Long Island, New York are preserved in this
park.  Also included are the Fire Island Lighthouse
and the estate and home of William Floyd, who was
a signer of the Declaration of Independence.  Some
of the parts of the park can be reached only by
ferry.  Vehicles are not permitted on the island beach
parts.  Lately the park has been having a problem
with the overpopulation of deer, who are
approaching humans; the concern over this situation
led the park to create a Junior Ranger booklet about
this and issue a deer pin instead of the standard
Junior Ranger badge.

The park has several
Junior Ranger
programs.  In Fall
2005, I went there and
completed a Junior
Ranger booklet which
focused on deer and
their interactions with
humans.  For
completing it I
received the deer pin.
On the Internet the
park posted another
Junior Ranger booklet
which focused on
other, different things,
such as the National
Park Service, the Fire
Island Lighthouse, and
William Floyd.  For
this, I got the Junior
Ranger badge and the
"Fire Island National
Seashore" Junior
Ranger patch.  There
is also a Junior
Ranger patch for a
program at the Sailors
Haven Visitor Center.
