De Soto National Memorial (Florida)
This park site commemorates the landing of
Hernando De Soto, the Spanish explorer, in the
Tampa Bay area in May 1539. He had nine ships
and 600 soldiers. They were looking for gold and
treasure. They explored what is now Florida and
other parts of the Southeast and mistreated the
native people. The story is all told here.
