Coronado National Memorial (Arizona)

In 1540, Francisco Vásquez de Coronado began an
expedition from Mexico City to this part of what is
now the American Southwest.  He was looking for
the "Seven Cities of Gold," which, of course, he did
not find.  He did meet up with natives and he
mistreated them.  Spain had already established
colonies in Mexico, Central America, and South
America, and the Spanish king was now interested in
the area north of Mexico.  This park site, which is
adjacent to the Mexican border, interprets the
expedition.  A limestone cave and a mountain range
are also within the park.
