Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical
Park (Maryland, West Virginia, & District of
Columbia)
This site is narrow but very long. It follows the route
of the Potomac River from Washington, DC, to
Cumberland, MD. In 1828 a canal was built on the
river and it lasted for about 100 years. You can see
the locks of the canal and old buildings from its
operations. The towpath, where mules would pull
boats along the canal, is now used for recreational
activities.
