Chamizal National Memorial (Texas)
This site, in El Paso, Texas, commemorates the
peaceful settlement of the last remaining border
dispute between the United States and Mexico. A
small area of land called The Chamizal belonged to
Mexico but got detached from it when the Rio
Grande River changed its course. The dispute was
settled during the presidency of John F. Kennedy
and the treaty was signed by Pres. Lyndon B.
Johnson. As part of the settlement the Rio Grande
River was shifted by engineers. Old border pillars
can be seen near the drybed where the Rio Grande
River used to run. Cultural performances take place
at the site's bandstand.
