Booker T. Washington National Monument
(Virginia)

On the grounds of this park site, Booker T.
Washington was born a slave in 1856.  He grew up
to become one of the leading voices of black
America at the end of the 19th century and beginning
of the 20th century.  He founded Tuskegee Institute
in Alabama in 1881 as a school for blacks.
