Big Hole National Battlefield (Montana)

The battle of the Nez Perce War of 1877 with the
highest casualties took place at this location.  The
Nez perce did not want to be placed on a reservation
and the U.S. Army had orders to capture them.  The
battle was fought on Aug. 9 and 10, 1877.  Although
the Nez Perce won the battle many of their women
and children were killed by the Army.
